10 Steps When Searching for Home Health Care Services
- Include at least three home health care agencies in your search.
- Ask how long the agency has been in business. Be wary. Some agencies that are franchise operations will claim to be in business for as long as their out-of-town corporate parent. If an agency is part of a franchise operation, ask how long the local operation has served your community. Consider agencies that have been in business in the community for at least five years.
- Ask each agency for its state of Florida license or registration number.
- Call Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) at (850) 414-6010 and inquire if the agencies you’re considering have any infractions or registered complaints against them that you should be concerned about.
- Ask the agency if it directly employs its workers, or if their workers are independent contractors. If an agency does not directly employ their workers, then their workers are not covered by compensation insurance, and you, the homeowner, are assuming substantial and or devastating risk if the independent contractor injures themselves while on your property. Always require the agency to produce a current certificate of workers compensation insurance with a telephone number for you to call and confirm the policy is in good standing.
- Require and check references – require past and current client references that span several years. By doing this you can determine if an agency has a favorable and consistent history of service to the community. Call at least two current and two past client references.
- What procedures does the agency have for emergencies? Are caregivers available around the clock? What are the credentials of the caregivers? Ask if someone is on call when the office is closed?
- Ask the agencies what safeguards they follow to protect their clients’ confidentiality?
- Does the agency provide a supervisor to evaluate the quality of care on a regular basis? Do the agencies investigate the credentials and backgrounds of their caregivers? Do they have references on file for each home care staff member?
- Do the agencies provide a written plan that details the services that would be provided by each caregiver? Such documents – including financial arrangements – should be given to you before service begins so that there is no misunderstanding about a service to be provided.
